This is the result of my bachelor's thesis. I wanted tro create a city in the style of the pre-Columbian city Tenochtitlan, which was the capital of the Aztec Empire. The city which was the predecessor of modern day Mexico city was built on artificial islands in a lake which has since dried up. I created these buildings with the premise to be used for a fantasy RPG in the style of pre-Columbian Mesoamerica, which the Aztec civilization was a part of. The Mesoamerican region in Mexico and Central America features a lot of diverse and interesting cultures that are predestined to be the setting for a fantasy RPG, as are many other unused cultures and regions around the world.
I created many modular assets in Blender and assembled them afterwards in Unreal Engine 4, which is what you see here. All textures for the buildings, islands, streets and walls were made exclusively in Substance Designer. I challenged myself to use that program as much as possible to lern how to create procedurally generated textures.
I wanted the environment assets to be as historically accurate as possible. Creating assets based on archaeological sources, images and books was the primary scientific objective of my thesis. Hence, most of what you see could in theory be used to authentically recreate the original Tenochtitlan, with a few additions.
This city does not depict the historical original though and is only meant as a proof of concept. The city layout you see here only serves to spotlight the different types of buildings I created and does not represent the actual layout of the ancient city, which would have been much bigger.
It is possible to walk around the city here:
